Step Deck & RGN Trucking for Tall and Drive-On Freight Across North America
Some loads are legal on width but beaten by height, and some have to roll on and off under their own power. Step deck trucking, RGNs, lowboys and double drops exist for exactly those loads — and Stony Freight matches the trailer to your freight instead of forcing it onto a standard deck.

When the Load Is Beaten by Height, Not Width
A flat deck sits high off the ground, so tall freight that would be legal on width can still bust the height limit on a standard trailer. A step deck drops the loaded height; a double drop and a removable gooseneck drop it further and let equipment drive on and off. Choosing the right one is the difference between a permit and a routine move, and that is the call your account manager makes with you before booking.
Step Deck Trucking and the Trailers We Run
-
Step deck — Lower loaded height than a flat deck for freight that is tall but within weight — often permit-free where a flat deck would not be.
-
RGN and lowboy — Removable gooseneck and lowboy trailers for machinery that drives on at ground level, with a deep well for the tallest loads.
-
Double drop and stretch — Double-drop decks for height, and stretch configurations for freight that is long rather than tall.
Pick the Deck Before You Pay for a Permit
Because we are not tied to our own trailers, we are free to put your freight on the deck that keeps it legal and cheap, rather than the one sitting idle. Often that means a step deck or double drop avoids an over-height permit entirely. Where a permit is genuinely needed, we handle it — and tell you up front so there are no surprises on the invoice.

One Account Manager, Start to Finish
Equipment moves on a customer's timeline, so the answer you need is a real date and real updates, not a voicemail. Your account manager quotes the deck, books it from a vetted bench and keeps you posted from pickup to delivery — the same person every time you call.
Your Account Manager, Direct
Every shipper deals with one named account manager, and you get their direct line and direct email — not a general inbox. The directory below lists the team and how to reach each of them, so the person who quotes your load is the person who answers when you call back.

Tall Load or Drive-On Machine? Let's Put It on the Right Deck
Frequently Asked Questions
How do I know whether I need a step deck or an RGN?
It comes down to how tall the load is and whether it drives on. Tall but liftable usually fits a step deck or double drop; machinery that rolls on at ground level wants an RGN or lowboy. Send the dimensions and we will spec it.
Can a step deck load avoid an over-height permit?
Often, yes. A step deck or double drop lowers the loaded height enough to stay legal where a flat deck would not, which can avoid a permit altogether.
Do you have RGN and lowboy capacity?
Yes — through a vetted partner bench we source step deck, RGN, lowboy and double-drop trailers across North America rather than relying on a single fleet.
Who will I actually deal with?
One named account manager, from your first quote to the signed proof of delivery. You get their direct line and direct email — not a general inbox and not a different voice every time you call. If a load goes sideways, the same person who booked it is the person who fixes it.
